It Sounds Like We’re Getting an Electric G-Wagen in 2024
This has been in the works for a while

Last year, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the Concept EQG — a prototype all-electric version of its G-Wagen that utilized a quartet of motors to blend off-road friendliness with precision engineering. Writing in these pages in 2020, Nicholas McClelland described the G-Wagen as “a ludicrously speedy utility vehicle,” and it’s not hard to see the appeal of developing an entirely electrical version of that.
Still, not every concept becomes a production model, and aficionados of Mercedes-Benzes and the luxury electric vehicle space as a whole have been keeping an eye for further developments. Now, it seems, that speculation has become a reality.
As reported by The Verge, Mercedes-Benz chair Ola Källenius spoke of driving in a prototype version of the forthcoming vehicle, and said that the electric G-Wagen would be available in 2024. Autoblog quoted Källenius as speaking approvingly of his drive in the prototype, saying, ““From now on, going off-road is electric.”
The test drive took place in Graz, a location long associated with the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. That, too, suggests an optimistic note when it comes to this new electric G-Wagen. If Mercedes can get comparable performance from this particular electric vehicle, it’ll make for another impressive proof of concept — and serve as further evidence that electric vehicles are ready to take the lead.
