Is $6,000 for Two Nights of Live-Action Role Play at Disney’s New “Star Wars” Hotel Worth It?

Your family is promised the "most immersive Star Wars story ever created"

Walt Disney World Resort’s “Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser” is described as a two-night immersive adventure where “you live a bespoke experience and journey further into a Star Wars adventure than you ever dreamed possible.”

But you might have to sell your landspeeder just to afford the weekend. According to Gizmodo, a two-night package will cost you anywhere from $4,800 to $5,999, depending on how many people you bring along.

And what do you get for that price? As Disney’s site notes, you’ll “stay in a cabin or suite with an exquisite view of space.” (Note: You’re not actually in space.) Once settled in — there’s no pool BTW — you’ll interact with an “eclectic collection of characters, sit down to exotic galactic cuisine and perhaps even plot a secret mission together.”

So this live-action role play (yep, LARP-ing) could be fun: You’ll get to wield a light saber, interact with familiar characters (and new ones, which sounds less appealing) and virtually operate a starship. Or work with space smugglers! Some ideas, however, sound less fun, like “follow the rule of the First Order” or “sit back, sip a cocktail and watch it all from a safe distance.”

You’re on your own for costumes, although the site helpfully suggests you can shop in advance at shopDisney or even on the “ship” if needed.

That said, it’s entirely up to you if all that sounds like a grand — well, six-grand — space adventure (that’s actually in a lot in Orlando). William Hughes at The AV Club sums up the cost nicely: “We’d be lying if we said parts of Galactic Starcruiser … didn’t sound cool, but what they definitely don’t  sound cooler than is buying a gently used Honda, or a decent chunk of tuition.”
