Following his death on Sunday morning following a battle with pancreatic cancer, longtime Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek still has one more gift to give to the world.
The final Jeopardy! episode featuring the 80-year-old as the host of the program will air on Christmas Day and new episodes featuring Trebek will continue to be broadcast until the last one on December 25.
Sony Pictures Television — which produces the series — confirmed that Trebek’s last day in the Jeopardy! studio was October 29, Variety reported.
Trebek began hosting the current version of the show, which replaced a version that ran from 1964 to 1979 on NBC and was hosted by actor Art Fleming, in 1984.
He hosted more than 8,200 episodes of the program across almost 37 seasons and set a Guinness World Record for hosting the most episodes of a single game show.
In a statement released to Entertainment Weekly, Sony Pictures said they are “not announcing plans for a new host at this time.”
“Today we lost a legend and a beloved member of the Sony Pictures family,” said Sony Pictures chairman and CEOP Tony Vinciquerra. “For 37 amazing years, Alex was that comforting voice, that moment of escape and entertainment at the end of a long, hard day for millions of people around the world. He was the heart and soul of Jeopardy! and he will be deeply missed by everyone who made him part of their lives. Our hearts go out to Jean (his wife), Matthew, Emily, and Nicky (his children).”
