James Holzhauer Returning to "Jeopardy" for Tournament of Champions

Next month, record-breaking Jeopardy contestant James Holzhauer will be returning to the show to take on the Chicago librarian who ended his winning streak earlier this year.

Holzhauer, who saw his 32-game winning streak come to an end in June and finished $58,484 short of Ken Jennings’ all-time winnings record, will face Emma Boettcher in Jeopardy!’s annual Tournament of Champions.

In addition to Boettcher and Holzhauer, the field includes the 13 other players who’ve won the most games since the previous edition of the Tournament of Champions. Airing November 4-15 in syndication, the 10-day event concludes with a $250,000 grand prize for the winner.

For Holzhauer, who won a grand total of $2,464,216 during his streak, that grand prize is somewhat chump change and is only about $120,000 more than he won during a single game, $131,127 (the largest single-game payout on the show).

This year’s tournament will be the first since nine-time winner Buzzy Cohen took the 2017 Tournament of Champions title as the event is not actually held on an annual basis.

“Although the Tournament of Champions is held nearly every year, the competition is not dictated by an exact date,” Jeopardy! explains. “It is slated when the producers determine that a strong pool of multiple-time winners has been assembled. In this case, the roster extends back to Gilbert Collins, the first streaker of 2018, and ends with Emma Boettcher, the librarian who brought James Holzhauer’s astounding run to an end.”
