Kim Kardashian West to Freeze Instagram in Celebrity Facebook Boycott
Instagram will be Kim Kardashian-less for 24 hours
A week after announcing the end of Keeping Up With the Kardashians is nigh, Kim Kardashian West revealed fans won’t be able to keep up with her on Instagram anymore either — for one day, anyway.
On Tuesday, Kardashian West took to Twitter to announce she would be “freezing” her Instagram and Facebook accounts for one day on Wednesday to boycott Facebook’s failure to adequately address its misinformation and hate speech problems. The star joins a number of other celebrities boycotting the platform as part of a planned week of action organized by the Stop Hate For Profit campaign, including Demi Lovato, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Hudson, and others. Earlier this year, the coalition behind the campaign organized an advertising boycott joined by a number of high-profile advertisers.
“I love that I can connect directly with you through Instagram and Facebook, but I can’t sit by and stay silent while these platforms continue to allow the spreading of hate, propaganda and misinformation,” Kardashian West wrote in a tweet announcing her plans to join the boycott and urging her followers to do the same. “Misinformation shared on social media has a serious impact on our elections and undermines our democracy.”
Unsurprisingly, the media mogul and her fellow celebrities participating in the boycott have been mocked by some who argue that a one-day, celeb-led boycott of a massive company like Facebook is unlikely to amount to any significant change. But the overwhelming futility of taking a brief, performative stand has never stopped celebrities before, in which sense, they may be just like us after all.
