Elon Musk Just Released a $250 Tequila (and It’s Already Sold Out)

Tesla Tequila is a $250 añejo "featuring a dry fruit and light vanilla nose with a balanced cinnamon pepper finish"

Turns out it wasn’t a drunken April Fool’s joke.

Teslaquila started as an April 1st, 2018 tweet by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, but it’s now officially a real spirit. Re-dubbed “Tesla Tequila,” (probably due to action from Mexico’s Tequila Regulatory Council, not a fan of tequila puns) the spirit is listed on Tesla’s website but already out of stock.

The electric car company describes it as “an exclusive, premium 100% de agave tequila añejo aged in French oak barrels, featuring a dry fruit and light vanilla nose with a balanced cinnamon pepper finish.”

We’ll try to get a sample to taste, but (surprise!) we think this’ll be decent, albeit unnecessary. Celebrity tequilas have an OK track record, and Nosotros, the distillery behind Tesla’s new release, makes some of our favorite under-$50 tequila … so maybe buy a bottle of that instead of shelling out $250 for this limited edition, which admittedly has a memorable bottle design.

Here’s how we described Nosotros’s other releases: “Nosotros was only launched in 2016 but has already won a world’s best tequila designation at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. And at just $40-$45, their blanco and reposado represent a true value buy.”

As TechCrunch points out, the Tesla tequila originally popped up when Musk tweeted a photo of himself passed out against a Tesla Model 3, while the CEO was holding a cardboard sign that read “bankwupt.”
