As cryptocurrencies attract more and more enterprising investors, many expect major changes to currencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum this year—or things could start to fall apart. MIT Technology Review broke down some of the biggest questions facing the cryptocurrency industry in the new year. In the world of Bitcoin, rising demand has caused rising transaction fees, forcing a debate over whether to dramatically increase the size of transaction blocks on the blockchain. As for the other massive cryptocurrency operation, Ethereum will have to answer to users this year: is Ethereum the basis of a potential new digital economy, or is it a glorified market for investment in new cryptocurrencies? The tech-savviest among us have a lot to lose, and potentially a lot to gain, in 2018.
