The first trailer for Vice, the movie that dramatizes Dick Cheney’s amassing of unheard-of power within the White House, has arrived. Writer/Director Adam McKay and Christian Bale have reteamed after the success of their previous collaboration The Big Short, this time with Bale taking on the role of Cheney.

The trailer promises a big-picture approach to Cheney’s life, from his time as Gerald Ford’s Chief of Staff all the way to his eight years in the Bush administration. “Discover the untold true story that changed the course of history forever,” the trailer announces.

McKay has chosen other big names to fill the roles of the Bush White House, with Sam Rockwell costarring as the president, Steve Carell playing Cheney’s once-mentor and co-conspirator Donald Rumsfeld, and Amy Adams taking on Lynne Cheney. Bale, in familiar method fashion, put on 40 pounds for the role.

Vice hits theaters December 25.
