A serial killer in Canada charged with murdering eight people over the course of several years has pled guilty to all charges this week, according to NBC News .
Bruce McArthur, a 67-year-old landscaper, was arrested last year. Remains from victims have been found on a property where the murderer once worked.
The names of his victims, many of whom were members of Toronto’s local LGBTQ community, have been confirmed by police: Selim Esen, Andrew Kinsman, Majeed Kayhan, Soroush Mahmudi, Dean Lisowick, Kirushna Kumar Kanagaratnam, Skandaraj Navaratnam and Abdulbasir Faizi.
Many of the victims were queer and people of color.
Detective David Dickson spoke to media at the Ontario Superior Courthouse revealing that the murderer’s motive is still unknown and that sentencing would take place next week. Victim-impact statements will be read on the same day.
“I hope that there will be some solace for the families and friends of the victims, and for the community more broadly,” Rachel Giese, editorial director of the Daily Xtra, a Canadian news outlet for LGBTQ community, told media. “However, I don’t think this doesn’t end the questions about how this was handled by the police, and what will be done to make sure there will be true justice for the victims, for the families, and for the community.”
McArthur will likely serve life in prison with parole eligibility in 25 years.
