Minhyong Kim, an Oxford mathematician, is working on potentially groundbreaking work in the field of number theory, according to Wired. Kim’s research concerns rational numbers—all positive or negative integers and fractions—and the centuries-old problem of finding patterns that connect them. The revolutionary parts of Kim’s findings are the inspiration he takes from physics. Kim has considered the problem geometrically, and believes that rational solutions have a similar trajectory to that of light. Kim’s work is yet unfinished, but once completed his theory is sure to be a matter of great debate across mathematics.
