Tara Fares, an Iraqi social media star, was shot and killed in Baghdad by two gunmen on Thursday. Fares was inside a car when two motorcyclists shot her, according to a spokesman for Iraq’s Interior Ministry.
Fares was a popular figure on Instagram for her fashion expertise, and had previously won the Miss Baghdad competition and placed first runner-up for Miss Iraq. An Instagram post on her account following her death read, “In a treacherous and cowardly incident, Tara Fares Chamoun, is with God. We asked God to accept her with His great mercy.”
Fares’ killing continues a tragic trend of deaths of women in Baghdad’s beauty industry. Last month, Rafeef al-Yaseri, a plastic surgeon and organizer for women’s health programs, was killed in her home, and Rasha al-Hassan, owner of a Baghdad beauty center, also died in her home.
Iraq’s Interior Ministry is launching an investigation into Fares’ murder.
