In the wake of Justin Trudeau’s much-maligned trip to India, Vice’s Drew Brown questions whether it’s time for the Canadian prime minister to tone down his celebrity persona. The reasons for Trudeau’s family trip to India remain murky, but he’s been heavily criticized for taking every opportunity to be photographed in traditional Indian clothing. Then, several photos taken of his wife, Sophie, with convicted attempted murderer and separatist Jaspal Atwal garnered further negative attention for Trudeau. Although Trudeau finally got to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the end of his trip, the usefulness of the meeting has been under question. As Vice suggests, this week’s trip could seriously damage Trudeau’s internet-friendly brand.
