At this moment the world’s biggest companies are competing to develop the definitive self-driving car, and the greatest source of debate in the industry is the usage of the deep neural network, according to the New York Times. A deep neural network is an algorithm that learns behaviors by collecting and analyzing data. In other words, while the conventional wisdom with autonomous driving is that programmers should code the car tirelessly to know everything there is to know about the road, the deep neural network lets the algorithm inside the car’s computer learn for itself. Chris Urmson, co-founder of Aurora Innovation and a former Google higher-up, is a champion of the deep neural network, and his company has reached an agreement to supply Volkswagen Group and Hyundai with its technology. The deep neural network very well could be part of the future of AI, and a source of major contention as self-driving cars hit the road.
