Look up on the screen! It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s a twisted horror movie!
Sony released the first trailer for the upcoming Brightburn, a James Gunn-penned twist on the Superman origin story.
Gunn knows a thing or two about the superhero genre after writing and directing the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies. He was set to direct a third — until old tweets containing jokes about pedophilia and rape were circulated by alt-right detractors who were incensed about the filmmaker’s vocal liberal politics. Disney cut ties with Gunn, who has since signed on to write a Suicide Squad sequel for rival Warner Bros., home of the real Superman.
Brightburn tells the story of a boy named Brandon (Jackson A. Dunn), who arrives on Earth as a baby when his ship crash-lands on the farm belonging to a couple (Elizabeth Banks and David Denman) who can’t have children of their own. But judging by the two minutes and thirty seconds of terrifying footage, this super-powered boy seems to be growing up to be more of a Lex Luthor than a Clark Kent.
The movie, directed by David Yarovesky and co-written by Mark Gunn, will leap into multiplexes in a single bound on Memorial Day 2019.
