Paul McCartney got by with a little help from his friends Ringo Starr and The Eagles’ Joe Walsh on Saturday night.
After finishing “Birthday” — one of which, coincidentally, Starr just celebrated his on July 7 — McCartney announced to the Los Angeles crowd that he had “a surprise for us, a surprise for you, a surprise for everyone,” Variety reported. “Ladies and gentlemen,” he continued, “the one and only Ringo Starr … Are you ready to rock?”
“Ready to rock,” Ringo confirmed. “Peace and love, everybody. (They’re) bringing out me drums.”
The two former Beatles played “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” and “Helter Skelter.” Dodger Stadium hadn’t hosted more than one Beatle since the Fab Four’s penultimate tour on August 28, 1966, according to Variety. It was the first time Paul and Ringo performed together since 2014 when they agreed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the band’s first appearance on Ed Sullivan’s show by playing “With a Little Help from My Friends” and “Hey Jude” on CBS.
“Thank you, Paul,” Starr said after the pair completed their duo of classic songs. “It’s been a thrill for me, and I’ve had a lovely night, and it’s a great show, and I love you, man.”
“And I love you, man,” McCartney replied before echoing Ringo’s catchphrase: “Peace and love, Ringo — forever.”
Starr wasn’t the only surprise McCartney had for his fans during a near-three-hour performance — The Eagles’ Joe Walsh came out next to join in on “The End” from Abbey Road.
