Everyone’s favorite spy, James Bond, is coming back through a monthly comic book series in November, written by Greg Pak and drawn by Marc Laming. The series, James Bond 007, will feature a new man of mystery, with a razor-sharp hat and admirable fighting skills. The New York Times writes that any similarity to Oddjob, the Bond nemesis from the 1959 novel Goldfinger (and the film adaptation of the same name) is intentional. The connection will be revealed throughout the six-part story. Pak first came up with exploring the character of Oddjob when the opportunity to write this new Bond series came along. He wrote a cat-and-mouse superspy caper that will pit Bond against the new character.
“Each of them challenges the other in ways they’ve never been challenged before,” he said to The Times. He also said he enjoyed playing with the contrasts between the two agents. Bond is sleek and stylish but Oddjob is big and unpredictable. Pak went on to say that for the story to work, there has to be an “emotional core and character hook,” and Laming helped a lot in this arena.
“It’s a really special skill for a comic artist to draw people in civilian clothes and still make them look badass and stylish and fun,” Mr. Pak said to The Times. “You need an artist who can draw remarkable, everyday people in hand-to-hand combat and make that as thrilling as any superhero battle you will see. I think he’s going to tear it up.”
