A new feature in Inverse investigates Mars One, the company that has promised for years to eventually deliver citizens to Mars, without much of a plan for doing so. The company initially offered Mars-hopefuls an application with a $40 fee attached for the opportunity to be among the first 100 to take the voyage. According to the company’s CEO, 200,000 people applied, yielding the company $8 million in revenue. Since first signing on, many candidates for the voyage have been disillusioned with Mars One, and for good reason. The company does not work in transportation and would need to rely on currently non-existent contracts with SpaceX or Lockheed Martin to reach space. Additionally, the company’s ability to attract investors and reach the $6 billion it claims is necessary to reach Mars is seriously in doubt.
