Two software engineers, a college professor, a lawyer and a United States Senator take a road trip.
It’s not the beginning of a bad joke, it’s how Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, got home on Thursday after deciding he didn’t want to wait for another flight after his first was delayed due to weather. King’s second chance at flying home to Maine from Washington D.C. — scheduled to take off at 10 p.m., about five hours later — was already experiencing delays, USA Today reported.
So instead of leaving his fate for the evening to chance and the weather, King decided to take a road trip with four strangers.
“You got to be spontaneous,” King later told the newspaper. “You got to say ‘hey, let’s go for it.’ Because at first blush, you know, driving from Reagan National [Airport] to Portland, Maine, that’s an undertaking and something you think about for weeks. We just decided to do it in about 15 minutes.”
The junior Senator said he met his traveling partners when he went to have his second boarding pass printed. He asked the group what their plan was and when they told him the 10 p.m. flight was already pushed back two and a half hours, the consensus was to take a drive.
“They said, ‘you wanna go with us,’ and I said, ‘sure!’ King recalled. “It was just like an old-fashion road trip.”
Over the next 10 hours, the newfound friends took turns driving, pitched in for gas and talked for most of the trip. King, a former journalist, said he loves “asking questions and learning.”
“I was just drinking it in,” he said. “Put me in a car with four strangers for 10 hours and I’m going to learn a lot.”
