The art of Samuel Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III has included smiley clouds since the duo started working together in 2002, under the name FriendsWithYou. The artists have grown more successful, and they’ve made public sculptures and a range of merchandise. Now, their signature character, Little Cloud, is making its biggest appearance yet, reports The New York Times, as a 30-foot-wide balloon in this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.

“Culture has a way of materializing what we need, and what we need is uplifting and optimistic,” said Mr. Sandoval to The Times.

“Little Cloud is a simplified symbol of light and hope, a happy little gift,” Mr. Borkson added.

The annual Thanksgiving Day parade has about 3.5 million people in attendance and some 50 million viewers on their screens. FriendsWithYou has two Manhattan gallery shows opening this month as well.
