Los Angeles Will Soon Have a Think-Tank Monastery Run by a Billionaire

The Berggruen Institute, run by Nicolas Berggruen, is flashy and vague.

Nicolas Berggruen, a billionaire formerly of the finance world, is at work on a home for his think tank that he compares to a “21st Century monastery,” according to Los Angeles Magazine. A spherical lecture hall will serve as the base of the Berggruen Institute in Los Angeles’ Brentwood neighborhood, a compound that has already been compared to the Getty Center. The ideological bent and agenda of Berggruen’s think tank are unclear, though he claims that the nature of governance, and how societies make decisions, are the focus of the institute’s work. Since the founding of the Berggruen Institute in 2010, Berggruen has surrounded himself with politicians, tech giants, and celebrities.
