How Stock Photos Reveal the Evolving Perception of Modern Masculinity

Getty Images has found a large jump in searches for terms like "man meditation" and "men crying."

"I followed one Japanese little league baseball team for six years. They are one of hundreds of teams who want to be the best and to be on top one day. They practice hard and give it all they have. I witnessed their ups and downs, their wide array of emotions in their commitment, will, and determination. They are captured here as seen through my lens" (Getty)

There’s a change in how boys and men are being searched for in the world’s largest media database, according to a recent article in Executive Style.

“We’ve … seen an increase in searches for ‘men crying’, which shows people are using words to try to get to the more emotional side of imagery,” said Rebecca Swift, the Global Director of Creative Insights at Getty Images. “There’s also been an increase in searches for quieter moments, men contemplating, thinking, meditating, not necessarily ‘doing.’”

The outlet also reports a 53 percent increase in searches for “gay dads,” alongside a 126 percent increases in searches for pictures of “man meditation.” There’s been a 60 percent uptick in searches for “single father.”

“I think we’re seeing the start of challenging stereotypes,” Swift said, not only of men, but of women, too. “Then comes questioning, then come answers and, then, a big step forward.”
