The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 has been criticized for the redistribution of wealth upwards, but as Drew Magary argues in GQ, the furthering of economic inequality is only the beginning of the problem. As Magary details, Trump has continued to destroy the IRS since taking office, making tax fraud by the wealthy an inevitably. Since 2000, the IRS has suffered 21,000 job losses. The wealthy people whom the tax bill is designed to help will also be in the best position to exploit a weakened IRS that simply does not have the resources to stop them. Thanks to the halting of an IRS project to automate tax filings by Turbotax and H&R Block lobbyists, Magary argues that the gutting of the IRS, and tax fraud by the wealthy, will only grow in scale.
