Fusion GPS Says Kremlin ‘Purged’ Suspected Spies After Dossier

Glenn Simpson claimed the Kremlin tried to eliminate U.S. intel sources after dossier went public.

The co-founder of opposition research firm Fusion GPS, Glenn Simpson, told Congress in November that the Russian government seemed to “purge” people after his firm’s research on President Donald Trump’s alleged Kremlin connections became public through a dossier. Simpson had a closed-door hearing with the House intelligence committee late last year to voice a host of concerns. The committee voted on Thursday to release the transcript of his testimony. One of Simpson’s central arguments was the Trump and his associates appeared to be involved in money-laundering, reports The Daily Beast, on behalf of Russian “oligarchs and organized crime figures.” For the past year, Trump’s allies have tried to undermine the credibility of Simpson and his firm, as well as the dossier that he produced. The dossier was funded in part by Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, which The Daily Beast writes makes sense since it revealed “eye-popping concerns” about the president. During the hearing, Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) asked Simpson about the sources for the dossier, and asked: “It appears that one of the sources was mysteriously killed?” Simpson responded by saying, “I mean there was a series of episodes where people were arrested or died mysteriously that came shortly after the disclosure of the existence of this information. And I do believe there was a bit of an old-fashioned purge.”
