Brooklyn Fetish Parties Introduce BDSM Fashion to the Curious

Vogue explores how an outreach campaign went from sweaty basement to mainstream club.

You’ve just been invited to a queer fetish techno party in Brooklyn. Assuming you aren’t immediately turned off by the invite, the next question you should be asking yourself is: What should I wear? A new article in Vogue highlights Bound, a fetish-party series that encourages—and in some cases requires—attendees to showcase BDSM-inspired clothing and accessories. Katie Rex, the organizer of the series, told Vogue that the dress code isn’t for shock value.

“It represents deviance, agency, and most importantly, it’s self-actualization. I feel most at home in a harness over mesh or formalwear, and most days, I’m wearing an O-ring on my neck,” Rex told Vogue. She also elaborated on the purpose of putting the show on in the first place, which in part is to invite the curious but inexperienced to see BDSM in a different setting. “How will people know they want to explore further if they don’t have a welcoming first experience with a community?”
