Vincent Asaro, who was allegedly involved in the the 1978 Lufthansa heist at JFK Airport so lovingly recreated in Goodfellas, is back in the news again. (He was finally acquitted of those charges in 2015.) Now in his eighties, Asaro has been charged for setting someone’s car on fire in New York City.
According to reports, the unnamed arson victim cut off Asaro in traffic, so Asaro got his address and sent a friend there to set fire to the man’s car—a pretty Goodfellas-like move.
Asaro was arrested on March 22, and John G. Gotti, the twenty-something grandson of infamous Gambino family boss John Gotti, was named as an accomplice. One of Asaro’s lawyers told the New York Times that Asaro has “faced a series of unfounded charges before and was vindicated, and he will do the same this time,” very likely referring to the Lufthansa heist.
