What’s cooler than a tennis court made from recycled materials? Perhaps a tennis court made of recycled materials that’s capable of floating in the middle of the ocean fits the bill. No, this is not the setting of some Seven Days in Hell-meets-Waterworld dystopian sports drama. Instead, it’s the place where Adidas launched its latest collaboration with Parley for the Oceans, in conjunction with the Australian Open.
The tennis court, Dezeen reports, was placed within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. It was the site of a launch event for the apparel company’s tennis attire.
“We have chosen to launch this collection in the heritage-protected Queensland marine park to raise awareness and positive discussion around how we can help end plastic waste and protect the Great Barrier Reef,” a spokesperson for the company told Dezeen.
The recycled plastic provided by Parley for the Oceans was used in both the surface of the court and in Adidas’s latest collection of tennis clothing. The tennis court itself was placed atop a working barge, and the surface will reach its final destination in the nearby city of Townsville, where it will support youth sports initiatives.
Plenty of games of mixed doubles take place every day. But only one took place on a court in the middle of the ocean; a singular location with a very singular purpose.
