One of the very best perks about being a power player in the film industry is the ability to watch first-run flicks in the comfort of your own home (or, rather, a state-of-the-art screening room).
The rest of us are stuck heading to the local cinema and praying nobody decides to bring a baby.
Providing an alternative to the well-heeled Angeleno: a new company out of Beverly Hills called Red Carpet Home Cinema.
Now rolling out in Los Angeles and New York, Red Carpet Home Cinema provides first-run films for in-home use. Thus far, Fox, Paramount, Warner Bros., Lionsgate and Annapurna have joined their roster, giving customers access to films like Shazam!, Hellboy, Pet Sematary, La Llorana, Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Detective Pikachu, among others.
But before you make room on your shelf, know that Red Carpet isn’t here to change the way the vast majority of us watch movies. The price is incredibly steep from snout to tail: for a cool $15,000, Red Carpet installs a box replete with anti-counterfeiting, digital watermarking technology in your home.
Once installed, you’re able to download films to the box a la carte, which you can then play up to twice in a 36-hour window. Most films will be priced in the low thousands (generally $1,500 to $3,000), though money alone won’t get you in the door. There’s a rigorous application and screening process, part of an all-encompassing anti-piracy process.
But for those who have the good fortune, can you really put a price on having a true in-home theater?
