Chicago’s Best Restaurant Celebrates Its 10th Birthday This Weekend

Feast, drink, blow out the candles at The Publican

Tenth birthday parties are a hassle.

Deflating bounce castles, late magician, piñata accidents — all on the table.

But a certain upcoming celebration at 837 West Fulton Market? Not that kind of 10th birthday party.

The Publican’s blowing out the candles on a decade of fine Chicago dining, and you are most definitely invited.

We’ve long been fans of The Publican, the most beloved member of local lad Paul Kahan’s sprawling dining empire. What’s not to like? The plates reach for a blend of comfort and adventure that is distinctly Midwestern, and nail it. They pair effortlessly with suds from your favorite neighborhood brewpubs, and even the crampedness of the main hall is charming — laughter’s a bit more honest when you can actually hear the person next to you.

And Sunday, October 28th, The Publican team is doing a bit of reflecting on the years that have gotten them here … the only way they know how: with a three-course, beer-paired blowout feast.

So, what to expect from the kitchen? Glad ya asked.

Baked harbison cheese, smoked black cod and roasted sunchokes. Cinta ham chop, maitake mushrooms and glazed honey nut squash-farro. Beers from Cantilon, Goose Island and Hill Farmstead. Not to mention a dessert bar that includes a little something called apple cider custard and pumpkin trifle.

Nothing like a seasonal, gratuitous, obscenely scrumptious communal meal to ring in another decade.

Reservation for the night start at $150 a person. Head here to reserve your spot.
