To keep tabs on every Chicago restaurant and bar opening is folly. But to keep tabs on the most worthy? Yeoman’s work, and we’re proud to do it. Thus we present Table Stakes, a monthly rundown of the five (or so) must-know spots that have swung wide their doors in the past thirty (or so). Bon appétit.


Don’t let the landlock fool ya’.

April eating in Chicago was all about the surf.

First, the Scofflaw crew reeled in a chef from Cleveland to man the kitchen of their new seafood boîte.

He’s doing a dynamite job and you need to make the trip, if only for his beef and oyster tartare.

And River North opened its arms to a bigger, more grandiose seafood den courtesy of the Chicago Cut guys.

Of course, this being the Heartland, there were some new players in the turf game as well.

In the Ukrainian Village, a casual neighborhood steakhouse flew under everyone’s radar.

Plus: BBQ of dinosaurian proportions by way of New York and delicious loudmouth soup from a long-awaited brewpub.

Enough options for an enterprising foodie to surf ‘n’ turf his way through the city.
