Lexus Just Designed a Spaceship*

*For a sci-fi movie

It’s one thing to be looking ahead to 2018 and 2019 models in 2016.

Lexus, however, is looking a bit further ahead: to about 700 years in the future, give or take.

In partnership with film studio EuropaCorp, the automaker has announced its new make, the SKYJET, will be featured in the upcoming Luc Besson film Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.

Hitting screens next year, the concept is not Lexus’s firth foray into futuristic film; SKYJET follows in the footsteps of the 2054 Concept from designer Harald Belker that was featured in Minority Report. A single-seat pursuit aircraft, the SKYJET is meant to reflect today’s reality — that is, made to be believable — while incorporating imaginative tech elements from a land far, far away.

Identifiably a Lexus, the Skyjet integrates a version of the Lexus “spindle” grille and headlights that recall the much ballyhooed 2018 Lexus LC coupe.

OK, so it kind of resembles a large fish with its mouth open. But it’s certainly not the first fictional spacecraft that falls short on the design front.
