It’s Real: GMC’s All-Electric Hummer Truck Is Coming

The EV will be introduced with a Super Bowl commercial

The new Hummer EV will be quiet, clean and ... still way too big, probably.

Hummer was a symbol of American excess during the late ‘90s, early 2000s. The General Motors war-machine-turned-grocery-getter was too big, too loud and too dirty. It was always doomed to fail.

Today, after months of speculation, GM confirmed they’re bringing Hummer back from the dead … as an all-electric GMC truck. The new Hummer will be quiet, clean and still way too big, probably.

It’s the first time the company is officially confirming the news, so they’re not sharing many details, but they booked a 30-second commercial for the Super Bowl (during the second quarter, if you want to time your bathroom breaks) and have released a few tantalizing specs.

According to GMC, the Hummer EV is estimated to have 1,000 horsepower, 11,500 lb.-ft. of torque, and a 0 to 60 MPH time of three seconds. Of course, the other electric truck that most people are going to compare this to is the Tesla Cybertruck that was revealed this fall. Unfortunately, Elon Musk’s company hasn’t estimated horsepower or torque for their model, but there are a few ways to compare them.

First, in the top-of-the-line tri-motor AWD Cybertruck, the 0 to 60 MPH time is set under 2.9 seconds, so we’ll call them equal on that. As for delivery, they’re both aiming for availability in fall 2021, so it sure looks like GM is fast-tracking the electric Hummer so Tesla doesn’t beat them in the truck department, too. Oh, and maybe the most exciting selling point for American buyers (especially those who will be watching the Super Bowl)? The GMC Hummer will be built right here in the U.S. at the General Motors Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant.

We won’t get a full reveal of the truck until May 20, so until then, and until the big game spot, you can sign up for email updates here and watch these teaser videos.
