This is Stuff We Swear By, a series in which our editors expound on an item they use (and love) on a daily (or near-daily) basis.

Item: MOFT Invisible Laptop Stand

Description: MOFT (Mobile Office for Travelers) launched their Laptop Stand in 2019 on Kickstarter — and it soon became the most-backed stand on the crowdfunding platform ever, with nearly a million dollars in pledges (it also won an iF Design Award in 2020). Since then, the company has designed a number of productivity accessories for computers, tablets and phones — primarily focused on stands, cases and laptop sleeves.

How I use it: The Invisible Laptop Stand is made of soft vegan leather and fiberglass material. It adheres nearly flush to the back of a laptop and can adjust to two different standing angles.

Why I swear by it: As someone who’s always used some sort of laptop support — albeit usually a hard metal stand — I was always frustrated using my computer when I traveled. MOFT’s stand is only 2.3 oz and folds flush against the laptop when not in use — at first glance, it doesn’t seem like it’ll hold much weight, particularly when you’re typing. The company claims it can actually support a machine at up to 18 lbs, and so far in my year of using this, I haven’t had any issues with the stand collapsing or getting bent out of shape while in use (and I tend to lean into my typing, so I’m sure I”m applying a fair amount of unintended pressure). And it’s easy enough to fold out into one of two different stand sizes.

Besides propping up my screen, the Laptop Stand has also improved my posture — I sit up a little more straight with my MacBook at an angle — and it’s eased pressure on my wrists. As well, I feel like my typing speed has improved with the stand’s ergonomic design.

MOFT’s product works with laptops up to 15.6″ and supposedly utilizes a residue-free adhesive, though I’ve had no reason to remove the stand; it’s 0.1” thin, so it takes up no more noticeable space in my backpack or in my laptop sleeve.

We should note that there is a newer version of the stand which utilizes graphene as an additional “cooling” element for your laptop — that’s available now for pre-order, but it won’t ship until July. As well, even with the original Stand, having the laptop propped above the desk automatically introduces some heat dissipation.

As well, the original Invisible Laptop Stand is currently on sale if you don’t want to wait.
