A Michelin-Starred Chef on His Favorite S.F. Meals

This week, we break bread with Nico’s Nicolas Delaroque

Give us a day, we’re going to eat (at least) five times: breakfast, lunch, snacks, drinks, dinner.

OK, one of those is a liquid diet, but still: five meals, five plates (or cups) to fill. Why not make each superlative?

Left to our own devices, we tend to stagnate (read: kale salad at Lólo). So we talked to a guy who knows: Nicolas Delaroque, the Michelin-starred chef at Pac Heights’ hotspot Nico.

Breakfast: b. patisserie

“Having worked with Belinda at Manresa, I know firsthand that her pastries are the closest to true French pastries I can find anywhere in San Francisco. All of her creations are exceptional, but if I had to choose my favorites, I would have to say her almond, chocolate and banana croissant. And her flan. Being located just a few blocks from our restaurant, it is convenient to swing by there on my way to work.”

Lunch: Cheese Plus

“During lunchtime, we are typically busy prepping at the restaurant, but on the weekends I enjoy grabbing a sandwich at Cheese Plus. The sandwiches there — like the Crissy Field and Happy Thanksgiving — are both great and quick. Back when I lived in Russian Hill, it was a neighborhood favorite of mine.”

Snack: Waffle Mania

“On the weekends we really enjoy going to the Marin Civic Center Farmer’s Market over in San Rafael. When we are there, my favorite treat to snack on is a warm Belgium waffle from the Waffle Mania Truck. I always get just the standard waffle with powdered sugar.”

Drinks: Amelie

“They have my favorite French beer: the 1664.”

Dinner: Sushi Ran

“Now that we live in Sausalito, when we want to stay local we often find ourselves frequenting Sushi Ran for its award-winning sushi — like the crunch roll and the unagi nigiri. When want to enjoy dinner in the city, we also love going back to Rich Table, which is definitely one of our favorite restaurants here in San Francisco.”
