When people go camping today, most don’t even think to pack a compass. That’s not really the kind of camping we do anymore, and even when it is, well, there’s an app for that. But as handy as GPS is when you need it, sometimes batteries die, service cuts out and phones get wet, and if any of those things happen that app ain’t gonna be worth its weight in bitcoin.
Ironically enough, the solution to this comes from an online class (not an app) that’ll teach you to always bring a compass and how to use it too.
Offering courses on backcountry navigation (as well as climbing, skiing, photography and a number of other outdoorsy disciplines), AIM Adventure U is an online marketplace that allows you to learn what you want, when you want and provides instant access to lessons afterwards.
Along with compass basics, the seven-part backcountry navigation course contains teachings about reading maps, understanding topography, choosing and using a GPS device, first aid, and even plenty of yoga workouts geared to your preferred activity.
“There’s no substitute — at all — for learning backcountry navigation in person, in the field, but the AIM U course is a great way to get an idea of what you need to know if you want to take navigation seriously,” Adventure Journal notes. “You’ll very quickly learn what you don’t know, and you’ll have a great idea for what to work on.”
If you’re interested, the cost of the course is $149 and it should take about 10 hours to finish.
At least you won’t mind the homework.
