While informing investors about a supercharged 20% jump in third-quarter profits, Ferrari CEO Sergio Marchionne casually mentioned the Italian marque plans to make only hybrid cars starting in 2019.
Y’know, NBD.
Citing a desire to make a “fundamental shift” in the way the automaker manufacturers its cars, Marchionne told Reuters the company wants to improve the efficiency of Ferraris as well as have the ability to produce more cars by partially conforming to the fuel and emissions standards that currently cap how many vehicles the brand can make each year.
Says Marchionne: “Although I neither commit to this nor do I give any sort of certification of it being our objective, it is possible the [annual sales] number could be well in excess of 10,000 cars in 2025.”
While he stopped short of saying there’s an e-Ferrari on the way, Marchionne did say that all future models will blend combustion and electric power to help “yield additional performance,” an indication that hybrid Ferraris will actually be faster than their gas-guzzling predecessors.
