Electric cars are a viable solution to curb air pollution in cities around the world, but time and space constraints limit the number of potential charging stations.
Ennead Architects has proposed a solution.
The firm designed “Charging Tower”, which stores electric cars in a vending machine-like garage as it juices up their batteries, as a concept for a client in Shanghai.
The proposal is a creative solution to the time needed for drivers to charge up their electric cars, which is much longer than refueling a gas tank. The “Charging Tower” design includes ground-level space for drivers using the supercharge stations, which gives the battery a range of 100 miles in 25 minutes. A standard charge can take up to five hours.
The building combines existing charger and stack-parking technologies to reduce space taken up by charging stations, allowing drivers to take advantage of the time required to fill their car’s battery, according to Yahoo Finance.
Ennead Architects wrapped the tower in reflective, perforated metal, calling it a “roadside beacon for electric cars.”
