It’s all starting to make sense now. Ever since Texas band the Toadies scored a top 10 hit in 1994 with “Possum Kingdom,” we were trying to figure out just what the heck they were talking about. The song tells the story of a menacing sequence of events occurring at a lake at night from the point of view of what can only be described as a murderer. The climax features the lead singer singing, “Do you want to die?” over and over again.
Twenty-three years later, we may have stumbled on an answer.
Red Bull recently held its Cliff Diving World Series at one Possum Kingdom Lake in Palo Pinto County Texas, where men and women from around the world dove from tall cliffs into the water below. Englishman Blake Aldridge and Aussie Rhiannan Iffland took home top honors. (You’ll also recognize Cesilie Carlton, who pulled off a viral stunt for Royal Caribbean earlier this year.)
While the video above isn’t quite the horror show depicted in the song, it might be for those that fear heights. Plus, picturing ourselves in a speedo at the top of a cliff, diving 89 feet down into a small pool of water would make us want to die.
