If they’re getting beaten, join ’em.
At 32-45, the Mets are no longer really in contention for a playoff spot which means they are no longer capturing the attention of most New Yorkers.
However, that could quickly change if they decide to promote 30-year-old quarterback-turned-outfielder Tim Tebow from Double-A Binghamton to the majors.
Despite hitting .233 through his first two months with the Rumble Ponies, Tebow has been making a decent case for himself of late and has gone 17-for-53 over his past 18 appearances (.321).
While not eye-popping, that improvement could be just enough to justify the Mets making a move that would surely improve their presence on local sports pages and attendance at Citi Field in Queens.
“I saw him last year at [Single-A] Columbia. He’s come a really long way,” Double-A Hartford manager Warren Schaeffer told The Post. “He’s a tough out right now. We had a really tough time against Tim Tebow. He hits fastballs well. He’s a strong kid. His approach has gotten a lot better. He’s spitting on pitches now he wasn’t early on this year. You can tell he works hard.”
Regardless of what the Mets do, it seems like only a matter of time until it’s Tebow Time.
