Police in the Dominican Republic now have six suspects in custody related to the Sunday night shooting of former Red Sox slugger David Ortiz.
The 43-year-old was at a club in Santa Domingo when he was shot in the back at point-blank range by a gunman who was driven to the venue on a motorcycle. In addition to the shooter and the motorcycle driver, police believe two other groups of people in cars assisted in the shooting.
Police are still seeking an additional suspect who remains at large as of now.
“At this moment, they are being interrogated and we will continue deepening the investigation to get to the truth about what happened,” chief prosecutor Jean Alain Rodríguez said. “Nobody involved in this unfortunate episode will escape justice, neither those who carried it out nor the mastermind.”
The “mastermind” of the hit was offered about $7,800 to set up the shooting. That amount would have then been split amongst the other suspects.
Dominican officials have yet to name a motive for the shooting, though various theories have been floated, including one that Ortiz was involved with a woman with ties to a drug dealer.
Ortiz is still recovering in Boston following a second surgery.
