The Bergen County prosecutor’s office has launched a homicide investigation after the discovery of a dead body at the home of New York Giants cornerback Janoris Jenkins in Fair Lawn, New Jersey.

The corpse, identified as 25-year-old Roosevelt Rene, was found in the basement by a worker who was tending to the home while the 29-year-old defensive back was away in Florida.

Rene was a friend of the Jenkins family who had been living at the house, according to the prosecutor’s office. In addition to Rene, Jenkins lives at the home with his girlfriend and brother.

The cause and manner of Rene’s death has yet to be determined by the medical examiner’s office, but a post-mortem exam is forthcoming.

Jenkins, who played football at the University of Florida at the same time as former NFL players Aaron Hernandez, Tim Tebow, Riley Cooper, is aware of the situation but will remain in Florida.

Drafted by the Rams in 2012, Jenkins played four seasons in St. Louis before signing with the Giants in 2016. He bought the $500,000 in Fair Lawn that year after signing with the G-Men.

A talented defensive back, there was some concern how Jenkins would handle life in the pros due to off-field concerns, including multiple drug policy violations, which surfaced in college.
