Known for dishing out hard hits on the football field, James Harrison delivered a pretty hot take off of it as well when asked about the ongoing contract dispute between his former teammate Le’Veon Bell and his former team the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Bell, who has missed the first three weeks of the season after refusing to sign his franchise tender, must return to the team by Week 11 in order to fulfill his contract and become a free agent next season.
Knowing this, Harrison said Bell should come back and accrue his service time – and then do something else.
“I’m going to go in there, I’m gonna get my credit this season that I need to get and I’m going to do the best I can to get out of this season healthy,” Harrison said. “For me, I’d give you everything at practice. You’d see – the cameras would see – that I’m fine, I’m healthy. But come Saturday, ‘Something ain’t right. I can’t play on Sunday.’ Because if I go out here and I mess something up, I’m losing a lot of money.”
Essentially advising Bell to fake an injury to avoid getting a real one, Harrison is likely not ingratiating himself to his former teammates in the Steel City.
Though he might not care. Following his release from the team last year, the 40-year-old linebacker signed with the rival New England Patriots three days later, and made it all the way to the Super Bowl.
Harrison retired from the NFL prior to this season.
