LeBron James is dishing out an assist to his new teammate Anthony Davis before the season even starts.
James, 34, is giving up his uniform number, 23, to his new frontcourt mate on the Los Angeles Lakers, sources confirmed to ESPN.
Davis, 26, has worn No. 23 for seven years as a member of the New Orleans Pelicans. James wore No. 23 during both of his stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers and last year in Los Angeles with the Lakers.
It is unclear what number James will choose for the 2019-20 season, sources told Yahoo. The Lakers have plenty of selections available as the franchise has only retired Nos. 8, 13, 22, 24, 25, 32, 33, 34, 42, 44 and 52. That means No. 45, which Michael Jordan wore briefly after giving up No. 23, is available for James should he want it.
On the set of Space Jam 2, which James is currently filming in L.A., the superstar player has been spotted wearing a No. 6 jersey, so that’s also an option. James previously wore No. 6 with while he was playing with the Miami Heat.
Whether is 45, 6 or another digit, whichever number James chooses for his jersey will instantly make it a top-seller.
Meanwhile, in free agency news, the Lakers have cleared enough cap space to sign a max-contract player to complement Davis and James like Kemba Walker, Kyrie Irving, D’Angelo Russell or Malcolm Brogdon.
