The last time we checked in on Kyrie Irving’s status with the Brooklyn Nets, it seemed inexorably intertwined with his vaccination status. Because of local regulations, Irving can’t enter Barclays Center — and as the season began, the Nets organization decided that they wouldn’t play Irving at all rather than have him available for road games in cities where entry into an arena is predicated on being vaccinated.
Evidently, things have changed. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski took to Twitter on Friday afternoon with a surprising announcement: Irving would be joining the Nets for away games outside of New York.
According to Wojnarowski’s report, the team made this decision for a host of reasons — including a number of injuries and players testing positive for COVID-19. That said, the team isn’t exactly struggling right now. They sit at the top of the Eastern Conference, and have gone 7-3 in their last ten games.
An ESPN article offers more details on what Irving can expect. Before joining his teammates, Irving will be required to test negative for COVID-19 for five straight days, and will need to take a COVID test on a daily basis afterwards. All told, the Nets have 27 more away games this season, though under current regulations Irving will not be able to play in three of them — two against the Knicks and one against the Raptors. It’s the latest development in a saga that’s had plenty of them already.
