During his opening round at the U.S. Open on Thursday, Jordan Spieth was caught on camera while walking to the eighth green criticizing his caddie for giving him bad advice about club selection.
Spieth’s previous two shots had both ended up in trouble: his tee the water after rolling 45 yards down the fairway, and the next in the deep rough past the green.
“I hit two perfect shots and they both ended up in the wrong location,” Spieth said to caddie Michael Greller in an exchange that was captured on TV. “Two perfect shots there, Michael. You got me one in the water and one over the green.”
Here’s Spieth hitting his third (after the penalty) on the 8th hole and then going after Greller:

Afterward, Spieth downplayed the exchange.
“When you hit a couple of shots exactly where you want to, and the first one is in the water and the next one is dead over the green, I’m going to be frustrated that as a team we didn’t figure out how to make sure that didn’t happen,” Spieth said. “Yeah, I may have looked like the bad guy there, but my intentions were that we should be in play if the ball is hit solidly, and I was out of play on both shots.”
Ironically, the day Spieth tore into Greller was in the midst of the Caddie Network’s first-ever Caddie Appreciation Week which is running through June 17.
Spieth finished 1-over 72 and is tied for 58th after 18 holes.
