As NFL team execs huddle up for next month’s draft, the New York Jets blockbuster trade for the third overall pick has paved the way for quarterbacks to go 1-2-3.
That makes it almost certain that USC’s Sam Darnold, UCLA’s Josh Rosen and Wyoming’s Josh Allen will be the first three picks — in whatever order.
“The Jets gave the Colts three second-round picks — two this year, one next year — to move up three spots in the first round,” writes The Athletic‘s Zac Jackson. “That’s a hefty price, but Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan and coach Todd Bowles felt they needed to pay it to get a quarterback.”
That means Browns GM John Dorsey now is under similar pressure to choose a quarterback first overall and possibly draft Penn State running back Saquon Barkley or Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson with their fourth overall pick. Because it’s become increasingly less likely that any of those top three quarterbacks will still be on the board after the top three picks.
Especially if the Giants trade away the No. 2 pick for king’s ransom to either the Denver Broncos or the Buffalo Bills.
