Teenage Girl Heaven Fitch Wins North Carolina High School Wrestling Title

After she finished fourth last year to become the first female to place at the North Carolina’s individual tournament, teenager Heaven Fitch returned with a vengeance and became the first female to win an NCHSAA Wrestling Individual State Championship this year.

Fitch, a junior from Uwharrie Charter, won the 106-pound weight class at the 1A division on Saturday, beating out an eight-competitor field that included seven male wrestlers.

In the final for the state championship, she faced Robbinsville’s Luke Wilson and won on an 11-3 major decision.

While competing against boys, Heaven Fitch became the first female wrestler to win an individual wrestling state championship in North Carolina.

The recipient of the NCHSAA’s “Most Outstanding Wrestler” award, Finch had a 54-4 record for the season.

“I kind of dominated the match if I’m being honest,” Fitch told WGHP. “I’m just glad I can be a role model for people younger than me and it’s so insane to be inspiring to others. To think that others look up to me is kind of crazy.”

Fitch grew up watching her older brothers compete in wrestling tournaments and even sparred with them at times. Now, she’s following in their footsteps.

“(My parents) didn’t want me to wrestle,” she told The Independent Tribune in 2018. “I’m pretty sure it was because they didn’t want me to get hurt. But I would just be like, ‘Well, if they can do it, then I should be able to do it.’”
