In the pantheon of post-championship celebrations, Travis Kelce’s been doing a heck of a job.
From “You’ve gotta fight / for your right / to Lombardi!” to the WWE belt to beer-luging the trophy to calling out ex-Chiefs/current 49ers defensive end Dee Ford, the Kansas City tight end did the drunken victory tour proud. And in doing so, Kelce joins a proud fraternity of recent athletes who not only accepted the role of Token Viral Party Guy Who Just Won a Championship, but took it upon themselves to push the form to new and thrilling heights in doing so.
Herein, six other modern superstars who took boozy title revelry to the extreme … and one coach who proved that even championships can’t make you fun.
Jason Kelce, 2018
Travis’s brother was a part of the Nick Foles-led Philadelphia Eagles who upset the Patriots two years back. Dressed in Mummer’s garb at the championship parade, the Eagles center focused his words on the city’s underdog spirit while calling out football writer Mike Lombardi (“some clown”), listing all the team’s perceived shortcomings (“Torrey Smith can’t catch”) and ending with both a “fuck you” to critics and singing, “We’re from Philly. Fucking Philly. No one likes us. We don’t care.”
Washington Nationals, 2019
After winning their first World Series title, six members of the Nats showed up at a Capitals game, where they sang “We Are the Champions” with the 2018 Stanley Cup champs and then rode around a Zamboni shirtless hoisting the Commissioner’s Trophy.
Alex Ovechkin, 2018
Speaking of that 2018 Capitals team … Ovechkin led the crowd (who he called “babes”) at the National Mall in a “We Are the Champions” singalong and then screamed, “We’re not going to be fucking suck this year!” before rambling an entirely incomprehensible thank you to the fans.
Brett Hull, 2019
Hull’s a hockey legend, but he didn’t play for the 2019 Stanley Cup-winning St. Louis Blues (he played for the team in the ‘90s and now serves as the team executive VP). Heavily inebriated, Hull changed the “Let’s go Blues!” chant to “We went Blues!” before singing a ridiculous, off-key, rather menacing rendition of the team’s celebration song, “Gloria.”
Mike Napoli, 2013
Celebrating a non-tainted World Series win, the Red Sox first baseman spent the night of the victory parade guest-bartending, walking around shirtless and ultimately inspiring a #DrunkNapoli hashtag.
Boston Bruins, 2011
If you can rack up a $156,679 bar tab in four hours, you make the list (kudos for the $24K tip to server Danielle, though it really should have been closer to $30,000). That includes 35 Jager bombs and a $100K bottle of Champagne. Several team members also danced topless and attempted to “perfect their Dougie,” the most 2011 reference ever.
And then there’s the anti-viral party guy
Aka Bill Belichick chanting, like a true dork, “No days off!” during last year’s Super Bowl parade.
