Let the games begin in Arizona.
During a press conference on Tuesday night, Arizona governor Doug Ducey said professional sports can resume without fans in his state starting this weekend.
“This does not mean a return to normal,” Ducey said, per the Arizona Republic‘s Anne Ryman. “This is a green light to proceed. It’s not a green light to speed.”
That means, once they are ready, the NFL, Major League Baseball, NBA, NHL and Major League Soccer can all resume practicing and playing games. Ducey said he had spoken with “leaders of some of these leagues” but did not reveal exactly who he had spoken to.
Arizona is home to the NBA’s Suns, the NFL’s Cardinals, the NHL’s Coyotes, and MLB’s Diamondbacks. Despite Ducey opening up the state, it doesn’t sound as if the Cardinals will be able to access their facility anytime soon. Per an NFL policy that was implemented during the pandemic, all 32 teams must obtain consent from local and statement governmental officials before any of the team facilities in the league can reopen.
As part of Ducey eliminating Arizona’s stay-at-home order, gyms and swimming pools will also be allowed to re-open in the state.
