Somewhere, People Are Showing Your Sexts to Their Friends Right Now

They promised not to? Ah. That's cute.

Sexting. We’ve all done it. A little friendly d*ck pic. Ye ol’ digital roll in ze hay.

Just a steamy, private, A-to-B conversation between adults, right?

But that’s where you’re wrong.

There’s a reason Snapchats self-detonate after 10 seconds — lot of people like to send dirty little secrets; far fewer people are keen on disseminating them among entire friend groups. But that’s exactly what happens one out of four times you send one,  according to a new study.

In a survey of more than 5,800 single Americans aged 21-75, roughly 23% of people who received sexts admitted to having shared those sexts with friends sans permission. And not only did they share, on average they shared with more than three friends.

So who’s kissing and telling? Men, more often than not: they’re one-and-a-half times more likely to sext in general, and twice as likely to text and tell.

“It raises the question that if someone sends something to you with the presumption that it’s private and then you share it with others — which, when it comes to sexting, nearly one out of every four single Americans are doing — what do we want to consider that type of violation?” said study leader Justin Garcia. “Is it just bad taste? Is it criminal?”

But you know what they say.

When you text someone, you’re texting every person that person has ever texted.
