Rustic cabin in the woods this is not

Now we don’t have the numbers on this, but observation suggests that there are few things more dreamt about — particularly in the dead zone between three-day weekends — than a cabin retreat on a wooded lake.

Probably the ultimate incarnation of this daydream is the new Pleated House by Johnsen Schmaling Architects on Door Peninsula in Wisconsin (the “Cape Cod of the Midwest”), a small but feature-heavy dwelling that makes your cousin’s lake house look like a toolshed.

Charred cedar siding gives an unassuming look, allowing the structure to blend quietly into its surroundings. A wall that is 100% glass sliding door opens on to a paved patio, and modern touches like a hanging fireplace and polished concrete floors bring the home to Thoreau-wins-Powerball status.

And there’s a green roof to boot.
